BOTOX® is used to relax facial muscles and thereby soften or eliminate the wrinkles they produce. I have been using BOTOX® for the reduction of facial wrinkles for over fifteen years. It is most effective when used for frown lines, forehead wrinkles and crows foot lines that appear on expression but just about disappear in repose.
The procedure involves the injection of a small amount of the medicine into the areas to be relaxed. I typically use about 25 units per area and like to use ice to decrease discomfort and bruising. The effects do not appear immediately but are usually apparent after about 48 hours. The relaxation typically lasts three to four months. Many patients that are vigilant about being re-injected at the first sign of motion recovery have gone on to maintain injection results for seven or eight months after receiving regular treatments for two or three years. Occasionally, bruising may occur, especially in the crow’s feet areas. It is advisable to avoid aspirin and anything else that may make you bleed more easily for seven to ten days before treatment. Side benefits of BOTOX® treatment includes a slight lift of the brows and even a decrease of headaches and migraines in some patients.
