Are you frustrated with saggy or loose abdominal skin? Do you have a post-pregnancy belly pooch that just won’t go away no matter how careful you are with your diet or how closely you stick to an exercise regimen? One of the best ways to resolve these and other midsection issues is with a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty). At my Roanoke practice, many of my patients from Lynchburg, Blacksburg, Charlottesville, and beyond are interested in the procedure, but they’re not sure whether it’s right for their goals.
In this blog post, I’ll reveal some of the questions I ask during the consultation process to determine the procedure’s suitability for my patients.
What can you expect at a tummy tuck consultation?
When choosing the most effective tummy tuck treatment plan for a patient, Dr. Silberblatt takes into account the following questions:
- What is the patient’s overall health?
- What are the patient’s goals?
- Is the patient overweight?
- How much extra fat is there?
- How much extra skin is there?
- Have there been any previous abdominal operations, and what scars have been left behind?
- Are there stretch marks, how noticeable are they, and is removing them a primary goal?
- Are there any hernias?
- Have pregnancies pulled the muscles apart?
- How much time can the patient take off to recover?
- Are there any financial restrictions?
A thorough discussion with the patient during consultation helps answer these questions. These answers will determine which combination of fat removal, skin excision, and deep-tissue repair I believe will achieve the best results. Sometimes, for example, I recommend pairing liposuction with a tummy tuck to achieve more dramatic contouring.
How do I know if I am a candidate for a tummy tuck?
This is a question I often hear from men and women who are considering abdominoplasty. The list of questions above helps me answer whether you’re a good candidate. It can also be a helpful guide for you to prepare for the procedure.
If you’re overweight, for instance, you can discuss with your surgeon how much weight you need to lose before the surgery is suitable for you. If there are financial restrictions, you can work with programs like CareCredit that offer financing for plastic surgery procedures.
In general, though, good candidates for tummy tuck surgery at my Roanoke practice are:
- Within 10% of their goal weight
I discuss some of these issues in a related blog post about setting realistic expectations for the surgery. Reading the post may help you prepare for your consultation and the procedure itself.
