In our last blog post, Dr. Enrique Silberblatt outlined the unique cosmetic advantages offered by a facelift compared to less invasive alternatives. In this follow-up post, he will detail the facelift procedure from consultation to recovery.
The initial consultation is, in many ways, the most important step toward achieving a successful facelift. I begin each consultation at Aesthetic Surgery of Virginia by asking my patients to list their primary aesthetic concerns. Some patients visit our office thinking they want a facelift, when in fact a non-surgical injectable such as BOTOX® Cosmetic or a less invasive “mini facelift” is actually better suited to meet their goals. During the consultation process, I review the advantages and disadvantages of each procedure to help ensure results that match the patient’s expectations.
The facelift procedure is ideal for patients who wish to not only minimize fine lines and wrinkles, but also eliminate excess skin and fat around the neck while elevating the cheeks to appear full and youthful. Each facelift procedure takes approximately 3 hours to complete, depending on the patient’s unique needs. To ensure patient comfort, general anesthesia is administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist. In addition, I perform every step of the surgery myself in our practice’s own state-of-the-art operating room.
During the first few days after surgery, a chinstrap is worn whenever possible to prevent accidental facial strain. Our patients can typically return to work after 5-7 days, though the final results of the facelift will not be fully apparent until the sixth week. Some of our facelift patients opt to combine the procedure with a facial peel or laser treatment for an even more refreshed look.
