Looking and feeling your best at every age is easier than ever. For some men and women, nonsurgical options may be the best choice to counter the early signs of aging. But mini facelifts and full facelifts offer more complete transformations for my Lynchburg, Blacksburg, and Roanoke patients.
In my last blog post, I outlined the unique cosmetic advantages offered by a facelift compared to less invasive alternatives. In this follow-up post, I will detail the facelift procedure from consultation to recovery.
What happens during a facelift consultation?
The initial consultation is, in many ways, the most important step toward achieving a successful facelift. I begin each consultation by asking my patients to list their primary aesthetic concerns. Some patients visit our office thinking they want a facelift, when in fact, a nonsurgical injectable such as BOTOX® Cosmetic may better suit their goals. In other cases, a less-extensive mini facelift may give them the results they want. A mini facelift can lift or tighten the jowls, lightly address nasolabial folds and smile lines, and offer quicker recovery time than a full facelift.
During the consultation process, I review the advantages and disadvantages of each procedure to help ensure results that match the patient’s expectations.
The best facelift procedure for many men and women at my practice is a full facelift that offers a complete transformation. It is ideal for patients who wish not only to minimize fine lines and wrinkles but also to eliminate excess skin and fat around the neck and to elevate the cheeks so that they appear full and more youthful. A recent study (Newsweek) found that facelift patients were perceived as being much more youthful, healthy, attractive, and successful than their preoperative selves, so it makes sense that facelift procedures are some of the most popular cosmetic plastic surgeries in the world.
How is a full facelift done?
Each facelift procedure takes approximately 4 hours to complete, depending on the patient’s unique needs. The exact details of the surgery depend on the type of facelift technique used and whether additional procedures such as eyelid surgery or a brow lift are also included.
To ensure patient comfort, a board-certified anesthesiologist administers a general anesthetic. In addition, I perform every step of the surgery myself in my practice’s state-of-the-art operating room. In most cases, my patients go home the same day. You can read more about one of my patient’s actual facelift experiences in this related blog post.
What can I expect after a facelift?
During the first few days after surgery, a chinstrap is worn whenever possible to prevent accidental facial strain. Our patients can typically return to work after 5 to 7 days, though the final results of the facelift will not be fully apparent until the sixth week. Some of our facelift patients opt to combine the procedure with a facial peel or laser treatment for an even more refreshed look.
