A question I hear frequently from prospective breast lift patients is whether or not their breasts can be lifted without the use of implants. The short answer to this inquiry is “absolutely.” In fact, by definition, a breast lift (or mastopexy) is a procedure during which excess skin is removed and breast tissue is raised to an elevated position on the chest wall for a more youthful contour and projection. During the operation, the nipple and areola are also lifted to a higher location to ensure a natural-looking outcome.
The only reason you would receive breast implants along with your mastopexy is if you desire to increase the size of your breasts in addition to having them lifted. If this is the case, a breast augmentation can – and should – be performed at the same time as your breast lift. During this combined procedure, the implants will be placed through an inframammary incision prior to the reshaping of breast tissue and the excision of skin.
Ultimately, if you are interested in breast enhancement surgery, my advice is to consult a board certified plastic surgeon to determine which approach will best fit your specific needs and goals.
