BOTOX® vs Dermal Fillers: What’s the Difference?

A woman is happy with the results of her fillers from Aesthetic Surgery of Virginia.

Nonsurgical treatments, such as BOTOX® and dermal fillers, have quickly become some of the most popular cosmetic treatments available. These injectables offer an easy way for medispa patients like ours in Roanoke to smooth out wrinkles and fight the signs of aging. All injectables aren’t the same, though, and some people are unaware of the differences between BOTOX and dermal fillers. Those new to the world of cosmetic treatments especially may be unsure of which option is right for them.

As we’ll discuss in this blog post, different injectables are unique because of their particular active ingredients and distinct cosmetic purposes. We’ll also explain how you can find the treatment to achieve your own specific aesthetic goals by understanding the benefits of each type of injectable.

How does BOTOX work?

BOTOX uses a specialized neurotoxin that relaxes facial muscles. By preventing these muscles from pulling on the skin, you can keep dynamic wrinkles from forming in the first place. A typical BOTOX procedure involves injecting a small amount of medicine into the areas you wish to relax. Common treatment areas include:

  • Crow’s feet
  • Frown lines
  • Forehead wrinkles

There is no recovery period after a BOTOX treatment, and patients can immediately return to their daily schedule. Results last about 3 to 4 months.

How do dermal fillers work?

Dermal fillers can also smooth skin texture and decrease the appearance of wrinkles. However, instead of using a neurotoxin, most fillers have an active ingredient called hyaluronic acid (HA). HA is a naturally occurring substance in the body that helps skin retain moisture and support connective tissues. It plumps up the skin and creates a youthful glow.

JUVÉDERM® is a popular filler option for softening fine lines, boosting thin lips, or filling hollowed cheeks. There is no recovery time required after this nonsurgical procedure. Depending on the product used, dermal filler results can last for around 6 months to 1 year.

Can I combine injectable treatments?

We use BOTOX mainly to fight wrinkles, and we inject fillers to add youthful volume to the face. Since many patients are interested in both of these improvements, we often combine BOTOX and fillers in a customized cosmetic treatment plan. Sometimes, in the case of liquid rhinoplasty, they can dramatically tone and refine the shape of the face.

By plumping and smoothing skin at the same time, men and women can enjoy comprehensive rejuvenation. Injectable treatments take less than an hour to perform and fit into the busiest of schedules.

BOTOX and dermal fillers each have unique benefits. But no matter which option you decide to pick, be sure to choose a certified professional to administer your treatment safely.
