There are many different ways for men and women to slim and sculpt the body. Two of the most popular options at our own practice are CoolSculpting® and tummy tuck surgery. As a plastic surgeon in Roanoke, VA, I do my best to guide patients toward the best procedure for their needs.
Both tummy tuck surgery and CoolSculpting are excellent for toning the body. But while these two procedures are somewhat similar, there are some key differences between them.
Tummy Tuck Benefits
Tummy tuck surgery is one of the most transformative ways to trim and contour the body. The procedure begins with a hip to hip incision, giving the doctor access to the muscles and tissues underneath. Excess fat is removed, weakened abdominal muscles are repaired, and the skin is pulled and tightened. The result creates a toned, flatter midsection and well-defined waistline.
Because a tummy tuck is a full, traditional surgery, more recovery time is needed than with a nonsurgical procedure. Activity is restricted for around 2 weeks, and you can expect to return to work after 2 to 3 weeks.
CoolSculpting is a nonsurgical procedure that targets small, “pinchable” areas of fat. The handheld CoolSculpting device draws fatty tissue between two cooling panels, freezing away stubborn fat cells. These dead fat cells are naturally eliminated from the body, reducing the size of the treated area. A few popular treatment areas include:
- Upper arms
- Inner thighs
- Lower abdomen
- Bra line
Because CoolSculpting is a nonsurgical procedure, there is no required downtime afterward. You can return to work or home immediately after treatment. Depending on the number of areas being treated, most sessions take less than an hour.
Choosing What’s Right for You
Both tummy tuck surgery and CoolSculpting remove unwanted pockets of fat. However, each procedure is best used by certain types of patients.
Tummy tuck surgery may right for those who:
- Want to remove loose, saggy skin around the midsection
- Struggle with a “belly pooch” created by stretched-out abdominal muscles
- Want more dramatic, noticeable results
- Are ready for the required rest and recovery time
CoolSculpting may be better for those who:
- Want to trim down smaller, “pinchable” rolls of fat
- Prefer a nonsurgical approach to body contouring
- Are looking for a lower treatment price
- Want to avoid extended downtime after treatment
In the end, choosing the right body contouring procedure is a very personal decision. Talk over your options with your provider to discover which choice is right for you.
