Liposuction at our Roanoke, VA, plastic surgery center is an operation that removes excess localized fat through small, hidden incisions. The most commonly treated areas include the abdomen, flanks, thighs, buttocks, medial thighs, and knees. Other areas that can sometimes be helped through liposuction are the arms, chest, neck, and calves.
How much weight can you lose with liposuction?
Liposuction is not a weight-loss procedure; it re-contours your shape after you are within 5 to 10 pounds of your ideal or goal weight.
What type of anesthesia is used for liposuction?
If the areas to be re-shaped are small (such as, only the hips or around the belly button), it may be possible to do the procedure under local anesthesia. However, most patients are too uncomfortable during the injection of the local anesthetic, even in small areas. We believe that elective surgery should not be an ordeal to be “endured,” so Dr. Silberblatt suggests that most patients do this type of surgery under general anesthesia administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist.

How is liposuction performed?
Liposuction and all procedures offered at Aesthetic Surgery of Virginia—including breast augmentation, facelift, tummy tuck surgery and more—are performed exclusively by Dr. Silberblatt in a state-of-the-art, AAAHC certified operating facility. No part of the operation is done by any other surgeon, nurse, or assistant. Patients typically do not stay in a hospital or overnight facility, but must be accompanied home by a responsible adult the first night after surgery.
At the beginning of the liposuction procedure, Dr. Silberblatt injects large volumes of very diluted local anesthetic to reduce pain and bleeding and also to help restore fluid balance affected by removal of large volumes of fat. To remove the fat, Dr. Silberblatt inserts a thin tube, called a cannula, into the treatment area. The fat is removed by carefully controlling one cannula to, first, break up the fat, and then, a second cannula that aspirates the unwanted fat.
Once the procedure is complete, you are placed in a compression garment that is not removed for 5 days. It is important to maintain compression during this period to help avoid accumulations of fluid in the operated areas. After this period, the garment and sutures are removed, and you may shower. You will then wear a new compression garment, one that is more comfortable, for an additional 5 weeks.
How long does liposuction surgery take?
The length of surgery varies from 2 to 5 hours depending on the number of areas treated and the amount of fat removed. Dr. Silberblatt believes it is unsafe to remove more than 5 liters of fat during an outpatient procedure and strictly limits removal to that number.
Did You Know?Did you know that scientists have found a large number of stem cells in fat and some people consider having some of their aspirate frozen as a possible source of stem cells for use in the future?

How long does it take to recover from liposuction?
While experiences vary, most patients can return to work in about one week. Some swelling and firmness can persist for 3 to 6 months, but final results are typically evident by 3 months.
How Long Do Liposuction Results Last?
Changes are long-lasting because the fat cells removed do not regenerate. However, the remaining cells can store fat, and patients with an unhealthy diet and sedentary lifestyle will likely regain fat at the treatment or other areas of the body.
