Over fifteen years ago I determined that, although I could change how the face looked with surgery, this would not change the quality of the skin. In order to offer a complete service for my patients, I would need to provide skin care in addition to the plastic surgery. To this end I opened Advanced Medical Skin Care at the same location as my medical practice. With the addition of these services, I can be sure that my patients receive top medically supervised skin care.

Why is Skin Care Important?

Over the course of our lives, we are all exposed to some degree of UV sunlight and air pollution, be it in casual or significant doses. Exposure to these damaging environmental agents – along with alcohol consumption, smoking, stress, medication, and/or a variety of other lifestyle influences – often causes the complexion of our skin to gradually dull, dry, and even develop texture and pigment irregularities. In certain, more profound instances, precancerous lesions may also manifest. The combination of all these factors generally results in a prematurely aged skin appearance.

Through the years, the skin’s ability to properly “renew” itself diminishes due to a combination of the normal aging process and damage incurred by environmental factors like sun overexposure, pollution, and even stress. As cell turnover slows, the surface layer of dead skin on the body begins to thicken, which in turn impedes the proper flow of moisture to the skin’s outermost layers. Not only does this create dry skin, it also produces an uneven skin texture as well. Additionally, continued exposure to the sun’s UV rays increases the pigment in each skin cell, often leading to the appearance of age spots, freckles, and skintone irregularities. Lastly, the skin loses its elasticity as both collagen and elastin begin to deteriorate, commonly resulting in the development of lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin.

Skin Peels and Microdermabrasion

Every 28 days, the outer layer of skin (medically referred to as the epidermis) completely replaces itself as part of a continuous state of renewal. The process begins in the lower layers of the epidermis, where new cells are regularly developing. Over time, these cells gradually rise towards the skin’s surface and are eventually shed once fully depleted of moisture. With age, this cell renewal process starts to slow down and lose efficacy, typically resulting in thicker, more inelastic skin that begins to wrinkle and develop other signs of aging.

Here at Aesthetic Surgery of Virginia, treatments such as Silk Peels, the BioMedic MicroPeel, and Microdermabrasion are designed to facilitate and improve the exfoliation process by swiftly removing the outer layer of dead skin cells, ultimately helping to make the entire skin renewal process more uniform and effective. As an added benefit, these skin rejuvenation techniques often require minimal to no downtime, enabling you to return to your normal daily activities almost immediately.

Skin Care Products

The proper function of damaged skin cells can often be restored through treatment with a variety of skin care products. By accelerating the skin’s cellular functions to allow for persistent renewal, healthy skin cells will continually push to the surface of the skin to replace dead cells for a smoother, more hydrated look and feel. Age spots and freckles will also begin to fade, and the production of melanin (dark pigment) will be normalized. Additionally, the production of elastin and collagen within the skin will be stimulated, helping to improve elasticity. The combination of all these functions works to promote a more healthy, youthful-looking skin tone and texture.

Baby Foot

The friction and pressure of everyday activities such as walking, exercising, and simply wearing shoes can lead to the accumulation of dead skin cells on the soles of the feet. Over time, this build-up of dry, dead skin may cause the feet to become cracked and even painful. While razors and foot files can be effective methods for removing dead skin cells, these are typically only temporary solutions as scraping and filing often generates additional friction, therefore creating more dead skin on the soles of the feet.

At our practice, we offer a revolutionary product called “Baby Foot”, which is scientifically formulated with 17 types of natural extracts to simultaneously exfoliate and moisturize skin on the feet. Fruit acid – which is the principal ingredient of Baby Foot and gentler than most other acids – works to penetrate deeply into layers of dead skin cells and break down the connective bands holding the layers together over the course of about seven to ten days. Once this process is complete, the dead tissues can be peeled away to reveal the fresh, smoother skin underneath. Ultimately, Baby Foot can be an excellent way to help you achieve beautiful, healthy feet – like that of a newborn baby.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a photorejuvenation treatment designed to improve the appearance of sun and age spots, photoaged skin, redness stemming from broken capillaries, and brown pigmentation. Using broad spectrum light, this non-ablative technique can be employed to target sun damage on virtually any area of the body, including the face, neck, chest, and hands. IPL therapy produces very few side effects and typically requires little to no downtime, often making it an excellent option for individuals who lead active lifestyles.

Fraxel Laser Treatment

For years, patients have desired a breakthrough aesthetic approach with many of the benefits of ablative laser skin resurfacing (performed with a CO2 laser), but without the downtime, side effects and lengthy recovery period. The solution: Fraxel® Laser Treatment.

During treatment, the Fraxel™ Laser is designed to create thousands of deep, tiny columns – referred to as MicroThermal Zones – in the skin. By penetrating through the non-living surface layer of skin and deep into the dermis, the intensive treatment works to eliminate old pigmented cells with the utmost precision, leaving surrounding, healthy tissues unharmed. Due to the laser’s “fractional” approach, skin in the treatment area tends to heal much quicker than if the whole area had been targeted at once, and during this time new, healthy tissue will be created to replace perceived imperfections on the surface of the skin.

Jane Iredale Makeup

Known as The Skin Care Makeup, the Jane Iredale line is so safe and beneficial to use that it is recommended by Plastic Surgeons and Dermatologists throughout the world.

Jane’s line is a highly-sophisticated blend of minerals and pigments which are micro-pulverized, using proprietary technology and processes to form microscopic flat crystals. These crystals overlap each other on the skin to form a filter that allows the skin to breathe and function normally while still protecting it from air-borne pollutants. The staying power of the minerals is so great that they rarely need a touch-up during the day. And because these silky-feeling powders are water resistant, they won’t crease or smear even during the most strenuous exercise.

These state-of-the-art minerals are available in so many colors that there’s one for every complexion no matter what the ethnicity.

Permanent Makeup

Permanent makeup, sometimes referred to as cosmetic tattooing, can relieve you from the everyday hassle of applying makeup and ultimately enhance your natural beauty. Permanent makeup is a non-surgical treatment that utilizes intradermal pigmentation techniques that can eliminate the need for daily applications of lip liner, color, and other common makeup products. This can be particularly helpful for women with cosmetics allergies, vision impairments, unsteady hands, and for those who simply want makeup to last without requiring seemingly endless touch-ups.

Permanent makeup treatments are performed by our certified Master Aesthetician.  She can help you permanently enhance the upper and lower eyelids, the eyebrows, and the lips with these effective procedures.

Butterfly™ Eyelash Extensions

Butterfly™ Lash Solutions can be a great option for individuals interested in achieving thicker, longer eyelashes. Made from single strands of synthetic lashes, these semi-permanent eyelash extensions are curved to closely resemble natural lashes, and they come in variety of different lengths and thicknesses that can be matched to meet your specific needs and goals.

Each Butterfly™ Lash is secured one by one to your own eyelashes, creating beautiful, natural-looking results. Once bonded, the lash extensions should not get wet within the first 24 hours, though showering, swimming, and most other water-based activities can be resumed thereafter. If you wish to apply mascara to your eyelashes, only water-based mascara should be utilized to ensure the bonding agent does not dissolve. Additionally, you should avoid vigorously rubbing your eyes, using mechanical eyelash curlers, and pulling directly on the lashes in order to help increase their longevity.

The average rate at which natural eyelashes fall out and new lashes grow in is approximately every 60 to 120 days. For this reason, periodic touch-ups may be necessary to apply eyelash extensions to the new growth and ensure optimal long-term outcomes. Ultimately, with the proper care and maintenance, Butterfly™ lash extensions can transform the appearance of your eyes with beautiful, lasting results.

Other Cosmetic Services

Over time, smiling, frowning, and various other expressions we make leave their imprint on our faces in the form of lines and wrinkles. Depending on the severity of these concerns, something more than regular skin care may be necessary to diminish their appearance. For indications that do not respond to routine skin care treatments – e.g. deep wrinkles, forehead creases, nasolabial folds, lines around the eyes, and more – cosmetic injectables and dermal fillers may often be excellent solutions. BOTOX® can be employed to relax the muscles causing folds and wrinkles on the forehead and around the eyes, and fillers like JUVÉDERM® can be utilized to temporarily diminish deep lines below the eyes and around the mouth.

Sometimes, however, even cosmetic injectables and fillers are not enough to effectively address our concerns. At this time, plastic surgery may be the most effective option. Whether it is a facelift, tummy tuck, breast augmentation or liposuction, it is available at my practice. I am a board-certified plastic surgeon and member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons as well as the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

One’s poise and self-confidence is directly related to his or her self-image.
